Best Things to do in Salzburg with kids

Art exhibitions, historical buildings, sophisticated shopping and restaurants. With the kids in toe, you might as well forget about it. Holiday with children means entertaining activities, fun and adventure in the countryside and if it has to be a museum, make it an exciting one, please.

Visiting the city of Mozart with children

The city of Mozart has many outdoor playgrounds with great views of the city. The city hills are perfect for ball games and other outdoor activities and are easy to get to with a buggy. A nice walk or a romp in nature – the Mönchsberg mountain, the Kapuzinerberg mountain or the big parks (Mirabell, Hellbrunn, Volksgarten) offer interesting sights as well as children’s playgrounds that are great fun.

The city hills are not just great for walking, but also for climbing. The Citywall on the Kapuzinerberg mountain is a popular short climbing tour that will delight children and parents alike. The climbing fun takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and once you’re at the top you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city of Salzburg. On request, the Nature Lovers of Salzburg  offer climbing courses and also lend you the equipment.

The Museum of Modern Art on Mönchsberg mountain offers special exhibitions for children, such as sound installations, a creative workshop and an open studio where children and their parents can get creative together. Another child-friendly museum is the Toy Museum, with a variety of different themes on several levels.

The Müllner Pfarre playground is one of the most beautiful in the city, with views of the entire old town all the way to the fortress. Next door, you find the Augustiner Bräu, where parents have the chance to relax a little, too.

The House of Nature is a real highlight for children. Here, it’s all about getting involved, exciting tours of the House of Nature at night and shark and octopus feedings. The natural history museum, the outstanding zoo departments and a very diverse Science Center provide the necessary variety. It’s best to plan to spend a few hours here – you will need them.

If you have fun and action all day long you need to eat well. You can enjoy your morning brunch in the family-friendly Stadtcafé, or at the Schweiger Deli in Itzling. The latter is a little outside the city, but there is lots of space and children are very welcome. At Gasthof Zum guten Hirten large groups with several children who have booked their tables are given a separate room showing children’s films. An interactive playroom at the Sternbräu means children have fun and parents can relax. The playroom is fitted with play and painting stations, slider puzzles, a labyrinth table and table football.

In the summer, athletic families will love taking a bicycle tour along the Salzach river. You can see much of the city and the bike is usually quicker than public transport. You can hire bikes from Avelo Active on Mozartplatz. If you want to take a trip into nature, there are numerous hiking trails, lakes and mountains near Salzburg to choose from. In the Faistenau region (30 min. from Salzburg) for example you can join the fun Fairytale Path that takes you along the Schafbach brook. Another exciting experience is the Eisriesenwelt Werfen, one of the largest ice palaces in the world. Very nearby, in the Hohenwerfen fortress, you can attend theatre performances and go on fairytale hikes.

You’ll never be bored in Salzburg! Generally speaking, nothing is very far from anything else and easy enough to walk for the little ones. A large entertainment programme and events as well as outdoor play areas and excursions complete the offerings for families with children and offer great variety!
