It’s a city where history, engineering, and a fair bit of weirdness meet: hippos in thermal spring water, a metro line that’s also a heritage site, and a naming law<\/strong><\/a> that somehow still allows “Legolasz.” Here’s what makes it tick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#1 Budapest was born from 3 cities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Budapest wasn’t always Budapest. In 1873, three separate towns, Buda, \u00d3buda, and Pest, merged into one capital. Buda still feels like the quieter, hillier side of town, while Pest is where most of the action (and most of the population) is. The Chain Bridge, officially the Sz\u00e9chenyi Chain Bridge, was the first permanent structure to physically connect the two banks, completed back in 1849.<\/p>\n\n\n

#2 Budapest is the thermal bath capital of the world<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Underneath the city sits a reserve of spring water that pushes up around 70 million liters a day through more than 100 natural springs. That’s what earned Budapest its nickname, the City of Spas, a title it’s held since the 1930s. You can spend a whole day hopping between therapeutic pools, sauna cycles, and even nighttime pool parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEININGER Tip:<\/strong> Gell\u00e9rt Baths, probably Budapest’s most photographed Art Nouveau spa, closed on October 1, 2025 for a major renovation and isn’t expected to reopen until 2028 at the earliest. #3 Hippos at the Budapest zoo are bathing in real thermal water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The mineral composition happens to be close to that of the Nile, which makes it a pretty good match for the zoo’s hippos. It’s a small detail, but it says a lot about how deeply thermal water runs through this city, literally.<\/p>\n\n\n
