MEININGER Hotels and investor LGIM Real Assets (Legal & General) have signed an agreement for a hotel in Glasgow. The hotel will be located on West George Street opposite Queen Street Train Station and will offer 160 rooms and 590 beds. The opening is scheduled for 2020.

Due to its strategic location in the centre of Glasgow, opposite to Queen Street Train Station which is currently undergoing a major redevelopment, many of the city's sights, museums and monuments are within walking distance from the hotel. Equally, there are numerous restaurants, pubs and venues nearby. The Gallery of Modern Art is just a 3-minute walk from the hotel and the Royal Concert Hall just 9 minutes.

Due to its proximity to the train station, the hotel is well connected to both local and long-distance destinations, with trains running to the north of Scotland and to Edinburgh, which can easily be reached within 40 minutes. The nearest underground station is also just 160 meters from the hotel.

The MEININGER Hotel will have 160 rooms and 590 beds, spread over 5 floors of the new building. The room types will range from classic double rooms through private multi-bed rooms to beds in a dorm room. The public areas such as reception, lobby, lounge, breakfast room and bar as well as a guest kitchen and game zone, which are all typical features of a MEININGER, will be located on the first floor of the building. At basement, ground and mezzanine levels the scheme will also create around 1400 sqm of new retail space.

The building was designed by the architectural practice NORR.

Derek Reid, Project Director for Architects NORR Consultants, stated "We are immensely proud to have assisted Legal + General and MEININGER Hotels in achieving not only this milestone, but also the recent milestone of securing Planning permission. Our design for the building seeks to balance an appropriate response to a strategic location within Glasgow City Centre Conservation Area with capturing the exciting dynamic of the MEININGER Hotel brand. We look forward to continuing our role on the project through to project completion and opening."

The hotel in Glasgow will be the second hotel for the MEININGER Group in the UK. MEININGER already operates a hotel in London since 2006. Hannes Spanring, CEO of MEININGER Hotels, is pleased about the new project: "Great Britain is a very important market for us and Glasgow as Scotland's largest city is the perfect location for another MEININGER hotel in the UK. The Glasgow hotel is an excellent addition to our portfolio, due to its prime location in the heart of the city centre."

The MEININGER Hotels continue to expand. This year another 6 hotels are going to open in Europe. Including Glasgow, a total of 15 projects are under development and further projects are being searched for. "The focus is still on Europe, but we are also looking for opportunities in North America and South Asia," says Hannes Spanring.

Craig Westmacott, Senior Fund Manager, LGIM Real Assets, said: "We are pleased to be working with MEININGER Hotels as they seek to expand their successful brand into the UK. This site is an excellent location for a new hotel and together with the redevelopment of Queen Street station will bring significant improvements to this key area of Glasgow city centre."

second hotel in amsterdam

The MEININGER Group opened its second hotel in Amsterdam on March 25th. The new building is located directly at Amstel station and offers 186 rooms and 806 beds.

The MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam Amstel is part of the tallest residential building in the city, the Amstel Tower, a project of the real estate developer Provast. The 100-meter-high property has, in addition to the MEININGER Hotel, 192 apartments. Thanks to its location directly adjacent to the Amstel train station, it is perfectly connected to local and long-distance traffic. It is only a few minutes by train to the center of Amsterdam.

The interior design of the MEININGER Hotel is based on the theme "sea level". Amsterdam is partly below sea level, moreover, the city is characterized by the water. Numerous canals flow through the metropolis and are an essential part of the cityscape. This change of water and land served as a source of inspiration. In the public areas, a panoramic wallpaper takes the hotel guests into the underwater world of Amsterdam. Here and there comfortable seating islands were placed to invite guests to linger. In the hallways and rooms, the element of water is playfully staged.

The 186 rooms of the hotel are spread over 6 floors of the Amstel Tower. All public areas such as reception, lobby, lounge, breakfast room and bar as well as the guest kitchen and game zone, which are all typical features of a MEININGER, are located on the ground floor of the building. A total of 20 on-site parking spaces are available for guests of the hotel.

The MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam Amstel is already the second hotel of the MEININGER Group in Amsterdam. In 2012, the first hotel opened at Sloterdijk station with a total of 219 rooms which has been extended to 321 rooms with 1,177 beds in recent years. Hannes Spanring, CEO of MEININGER Hotels, says: "Amsterdam is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with an international flair and numerous attractions, and therefore a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. We also notice this through high demand from our customers. Therefore, we are all the more pleased to be represented with a second hotel in Amsterdam, as part of the Amstel Tower and again in a good location."

MEININGER hotels continue to expand. This year another 6 hotels are going to open in Europe. A total of 14 projects are under development and further projects are being searched for. "The focus is still on Europe, but we are also looking for opportunities in North America and South Asia," says Hannes Spanring. With the opening of the MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam Amstel, the hotel group now operates 20 hotels with a total of 10,492 beds and 2,978 rooms.

MEININGER Hotels have opened a hotel in Milan on 18th of December, which is the first one of the hotel group in Italy. The MEININGER Milano Garibaldi offers 80 rooms and 268 beds and is located in the centre of the city on Strada Privata Calvino 11 close to the Garibaldi train station.

The existing building, which previously served as a hostel, was converted into a MEININGER hotel over the last 10 months. "I am delighted that in these few months we have managed to redesign the entire property in accordance with the MEININGER standards and be able to open it this year as a MEININGER hotel", says Hannes Spanring, CEO of MEININGER hotels.

As typical for MEININGER, the interior design of the hotel is based on the near surroundings of the building. Inspired by the Garibaldi station, as well as the local metro and tram lines, the theme "Urban Connectivity" was implemented holistically in the rooms and public areas. In the lobby of the MEININGER Milano Garibaldi, a lounge area was modelled after a tram wagon, in the breakfast room lamp cables run like overhead lines of a tram below the ceiling and the wall next to the entrance presents an oversized transport map of Milan. Here and there materials and colours remind of stations and public transport of the city. In the rooms elements of a wagon are picked up in the furniture. The beds are framed with yellow metal, a handrail serves as a clothes rail.

The room types of the MEININGER Milano Garibaldi range from classic double rooms and private multi-bed rooms, through to a bed in a dormitory. All public spaces including the reception, lobby, lounge, breakfast room and bar as well as guest kitchen and games room, which are all typical features of a MEININGER, are located on the ground floor of the building. Hannes Spanring says "MEININGER is a hybrid product that combines essential elements of both, Hotel and Hostel and thereby attracts various types of guests alike".

Thanks to its location, the hotel is easily accessible by public transport or by car. The MEININGER is the perfect base to explore the city. Due to its excellent transport links, the historical centre of the city can be reached conveniently within 15 minutes.

The MEININGER Milano Garibaldi is already the second property of the hotel group that opened in December this year. On 1st December, the MEININGER Hotel Berlin East Side Gallery welcomed its first guests. "The opening of the MEININGER Milano Garibaldi is an important step for the MEININGER Group and an excellent addition to our portfolio. Italy is an important market for us. We will open two more properties here next year. One in Rome in March and one more in Milan in late summer next year", says Hannes Spanring. And more hotels are going to follow. Next year, MEININGER will open five more hotels throughout Europe additionally to the two openings in Italy.

MEININGER continues to expand. A total of 15 new hotels are already planned. Although the focus is on Europe, opportunities in North America and South Asia are being examined in the search of further projects. Currently the MEININGER Group operates 19 hotels in Europe with 2,792 rooms and 9,510 beds in total.

MEININGER Hotels have opened their fifth hotel in Berlin on 1st of December. The new building with 245 rooms and 833 beds is well located right next to East Side Gallery and Ostbahnhof.

MEININGER Hotels have opened their fifth hotel in Berlin on 1st of December. The new building with 245 rooms and 833 beds is well located right next to East Side Gallery and Ostbahnhof.

Thanks to its excellent location and convenient public transport links, the MEININGER Hotel Berlin East Side Gallery is the perfect base to explore the whole city. The trendy districts Mitte and Kreuzberg are only a few minutes away. The East Side Gallery and Oberbaumbrücke are within walking distance of the hotel. The proximity to the Ostbahnhof, which can be reached in a 2 minutes' walk, guarantees a comfortable journey. For guests arriving by car the hotel offers 17 parking spaces in the underground car park.

The design of each MEININGER hotel is based on an individual theme. The interior design of this hotel was inspired by the immediate proximity to the former border wall separating East- and Westberlin, the East Side Gallery. With "be united" the history of the wall and the reunification is taken up and the philosophy of the MEININGER Hotels is reflected at the same time. "Every day, guests from all over the world meet here and exchange views in a relaxed atmosphere in the guest kitchen, game zone, lobby, lounge and bar," says Hannes Spanring, CEO of MEININGER Hotels.

In the public areas of the MEININGER Hotel Berlin East Side Gallery, two long tables serve as a connecting element between different areas of the hotel. Opposite the bar, the text "be united" illuminates the room on a concrete wall. The modern, straightforward design is interrupted here and there by colourful highlights.

On the way to the rooms, the guests come across interesting quotes about the reunification and togetherness. In the cozy rooms, modern graffitis reflect the theme. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow a perfect view on a vibrant Berlin and a quarter in a process of change. As usual, the room types range from classic double rooms and private multi-bed rooms, through to a bed in a dormitory. The hotel also offers superior rooms on the upper floors of the building. "Also in this new hotel, we expect the typical mix of guest types including groups, families, backpackers, business and leisure travellers, which makes MEININGER so unique", says Hannes Spanring.

The opening of the MEININGER Hotel at the East Side Gallery is the beginning of a series of openings that will follow in the next nine months. By September next year, MEININGER will open eight more hotels across Europe. Including another one in Berlin. "Berlin is an important location for us, for this reason we are keen to open more hotels here. A sixth MEININGER hotel is already under development, in Turmstrasse in Moabit. It will welcome its first guests in the summer of next year", says Hannes Spanring.

MEININGER continues to expand. A total of 16 new hotels are already planned. Although the focus is on Europe, opportunities in North America and South Asia are being examined in the search of further projects. Currently the MEININGER Group operates 18 hotels in Europe with 2,712 rooms and 9,242 beds in total.

About the Global Youth Travel Awards

The Global Youth Travel Awards formally recognise outstanding performers in fifteen fields of international youth travel and reward WYSE Travel Confederation members and other stakeholders in the youth, student and educational travel industry who make an outstanding contribution to our industry.

The Global Youth Travel Awards began at the World Youth Student and Educational Conference (WYSTC) 2011 in Barcelona with a focus on bringing to light the great experiences being provided by members of our community.

In subsequent years – 2012 in San Diego, 2013 in Sydney, 2014 in Dublin, 2015 in Cape Town and 2016 in Belgrade – the awards have evolved to include members of the wider youth travel industry and a greater number of awards.

As the prestige of the Global Youth Travel Awards has grown, so has the awards ceremony, which takes place at every WYSTC Conference.

It will feature 104 rooms and 368 beds and is expected to open in 2020. It will be the second MEININGER project in Switzerland. The hotel group is going to open a hotel in Zurich in fall 2019.

Thanks to its excellent location the hotel is the perfect base to explore the city. The city center and the lake of Geneva can be reached within 20 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by bike. Public transportation is provided right next to the building by trolleybus lines, which takes the guests to the airport within 15 minutes and to the central station in less than 10 minutes.

The new build hotel with a gross floor area of 4,400 sqm will feature 104 rooms and 368 beds on five floors; well-equipped with TV, free wifi and en-suite bathrooms all to a high specification.
