Exploring the world and experiencing community at the same time: These values form the basis of the partnership between MEININGER Hotels and Red Bull.

To Berlin in seven days with Red Bull cans as the only currency

MEININGER Hotels is the official hospitality partner of Red Bull Can You Make It? 2024, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for adventure seekers from around the world. It's offering rooms in four starting cities for participants of the event and Red Bull employees. In Milan, Copenhagen, Budapest, and Amsterdam, the respective MEININGER Hotels are the starting point for the participating teams of three. Here, they'll be welcomed and briefed before the exciting journey across Europe begins. The teams will then try to reach the finish line in Berlin in just seven days, using only Red Bull cans as currency.

Who arrives in Berlin first is not the deciding factor; the teams will be judged on three factors:

  1. number of challenges at specified checkpoints across several countries in Europe,

  1. completed tasks on the adventure challenge list,

  1. sharing their adventures on their social media channels and www.redbullcanyoumakeit.com.

The daily experiences therefore count more than being the fastest team. MEININGER Hotels will also accommodate the teams and Red Bull employees in the destination city of Berlin, providing rooms in four hotels across the city center.

Discovering & supporting community: Values that unite

Community is a top priority at MEININGER Hotels. Its facilities offer a variety of opportunities for one to socialize with other guests; if desired. Almost every MEININGER hotel has a game zone with a selection of board and card games, a pool table, and table football. Other good meeting spots are the guest kitchen or the bar, where guests can relax, enjoy the company of others, or start an exciting night out. "MEININGER Hotels guests are curious explorers, and we support them in getting the most out of their trip. Our hotels are places where exciting moments begin. They are the base to start explorations and they allow experiencing this in a community. We're delighted that we can also be this base for the Red Bull Can You Make It? candidates, in line with our slogan "Step out and Explore". Experiencing adventure, discovering the world, and doing so as a team; that's what Red Bull stands for, just like MEININGER Hotels," says Ajit Menon, CEO of MEININGER Hotels.

Red Bull Can You Make It? - that's what it's about:

Red Bull Can You Make It? challenges teams of 3 to the adventure of a lifetime. Teams from all over the world have seven days to travel across Europe using only cans of Red Bull as currency. Viewers can follow the teams' journey on the official Red Bull Can You Make It? website. The teams will earn points by completing numerous checkpoint and adventure challenges in different European countries to secure first place on the leaderboard. It's not about being the first team to reach the finish line; it's about the adventures along the way.

This journey is about using wits, charm, and strategy to answer one important question: Can You Make It?

The European hotel group is investing in comprehensive renovations of three properties: one in Munich and two in Vienna, as part of over 10 larger-scale hotel refurbishments in 2024.

MEININGER Hotel Munich City Centre becomes MEININGER Hotel München Zentrum

Despite its new name, the MEININGER Hotel München Zentrum, situated directly on Landsbergerstraße, will maintain its prime location, ensuring it remains a versatile and convenient starting point for our guests. The famous Theresienwiese is within walking distance, as are the central bus station and the main railway station, and Munich city centre is just a few minutes away by public transport. After the extensive renovation, which started in June 2023, the hotel's design will combine the tranquillity and charm of the Bavarian countryside with the dynamism, diversity and modernity of the city of Munich. It's 94 rooms with 394 beds will use wooden and metallic elements, heralding a new era of MEININGER.

Ajit Menon, CEO of MEININGER Hotels: "Munich is an important location for us. Events such as the Oktoberfest, the European Championship 2024 and many major trade fairs are crowd-pullers, so it goes without saying that we want to maintain a strong presence in the Bavarian capital. That is why we attach great importance to fulfilling the MEINIGNER quality standard at our most central Munich location. The renovation is in line with our sustainability approach and the values we stand for as a company."

The renovated and renamed MEININGER Hotel München Zentrum is expected to welcome guests in summer 2024.

MEININGER Hotel Wien Downtown Sissi gets a new look

Not only in the Bavarian capital are significant renovation works planned: The European hotel group has extended the contract with landlord GalCap for the Hotel Wien Downtown Sissi by 20 years and is accordingly planning the renovation of the property.

The MEININGER Hotel Wien Downtown Sissi, with 102 rooms and 294 beds, is located in the heart of Vienna in the 2nd district. In 2024, it is set to receive a new look with extensive modernizations planned, while maintaining its central location. The renovations are primarily scheduled for public areas, but the rooms and corridors are also expected to benefit from the new design.

Even today, the elegance of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary is visible in Vienna. The planned seven-figure investment in renovation aims to make the MEININGER Hotel Vienna Downtown Sissi shine in new splendor, preserving its old-world charm and attention to detail. At the same time, the facilities are intended to be upgraded to the standards of the new generation of MEININGER Hotels.

Marco Kohla, Managing Partner of GalCap, states: "We are very pleased to solidify the successful collaboration with MEININGER Hotels for another 20 years. Stable, long-term partnerships are the core of our business model. The concept of MEININGER Hotels fits excellently into our mixed-use property at this outstanding location."

After the contract extension until 2043, the MEININGER Hotel Wien Downtown Franz will also undergo renovation in 2024.

What would Sissi be without Franz? In addition to the refurbishment of the MEININGER Hotel Wien Downtown Sissi, the MEININGER Hotel Wien Downtown Franz is set to shine in new splendor in the coming year. Located in Leopoldstadt in the 2nd district of Vienna, the hotel has 131 rooms and 487 beds, a guest kitchen, a game zone, and other typical MEININGER amenities. Following the motto "imperial lodging," the hotel will undergo extensive modernization with a seven-figure investment. The innovations in public areas and rooms are expected to welcome guests in an imperial manner by the end of 2024.

The LLB Immo KAG, a subsidiary of Liechtensteinische Landesbank (Österreich) AG and established for many years in the real estate investment fund business, acquired the property for one of its environmentally certified UZ49 special funds in 2021. Michael Schoppe, Managing Director of LLB Immo KAG, says, "In the MEININGER Hotels group, we see a strong partner who shares our views on sustainable building use. High emphasis is placed on sustainability and material ecology in all measures. The declared goal here is also to obtain a climate declaration."

The modernization measures are set to begin in 2024. Alexander Hauer, responsible Asset Manager at LLB Immo KAG, expresses excitement about future collaboration and the outcome of the refurbishments.

Ajit Menon, CEO of MEININGER Hotels, on the renovations in Vienna, states: "Our two hotels in the Austrian capital are something special - not only because of their names Sissi & Franz. Being able to operate two such unique and centrally located properties in Vienna is extremely important to us. Therefore, we are very pleased that we were able to extend the leases of both for another 20 years. To prepare the properties for the next 20 years and bring them up to the current MEININGER standard, we have decided on comprehensive modernization works."

In addition to the Munich hotel and the two houses in Vienna, MEININGER Hotels has ambitious plans for renovations at several other properties across Europe in 2024. This refurbishment effort will encompass the second MEININGER Hotel in Munich, multiple houses in Berlin, as well as properties in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Rome, Salzburg, and Copenhagen.

Go to press release

Today marks the opening of the first MEININGER Hotel in Cologne, the MEININGER Hotel Cologne West. With this addition, the hotel chain now has a presence in nine German cities with a total of 15 hotels.

Artistic design and a welcoming culture at MEININGER

The design of the MEININGER Hotel Cologne West follows the theme "Art for everyone now," aiming to inspire guests and stimulate conversation. The design is vibrant, varied, and slightly eccentric - just like the city of Cologne. After all, where else can guests be impressed by a cathedral over 600 years old, learn and drink Kölsch, celebrate Carnival, and find a thriving LGBTQI+ community? Such an open-minded city deserves a hotel where a welcoming culture is practiced. Therefore, for the first time in a MEININGER establishment, gender-neutral toilets have been introduced, promoting further inclusivity.

"MEININGER welcomes everyone and supports and respects all kinds of guest groups, individuals, and communities. That's why our new location in Cologne is designed to offer something for everyone. Guests who take our motto 'Step out and explore' literally are well-prepared to discover the city thanks to our excellent connectivity. Those who prefer spending time at the hotel can enjoy the game zone, cook a cozy meal, or meet like-minded individuals at the bar," says Pieter Bas van Litsenburg, Regional Director at MEININGER Hotels.

Location and surroundings

The hotel is situated in OVUM, a new urban complex in the Braunsfeld district of Cologne, which offers dining, parking, a supermarket, retail stores, a café, and free WiFi. The RheinEnergieStadion, home of 1. FC Köln, is nearby. Also in close proximity are the Botanical Garden, Technology Park, and Lindenthaler Animal Park. For trips to the city center, a bus stop is right outside the hotel, and the nearest S-Bahn station is just a ten-minute walk away. Bonn Airport can be reached via public transport in about 30 minutes, and the Cologne Cathedral is just one S-Bahn ride away. The hotel is ideal for families, couples, backpackers, business travelers, and groups of friends or students.

MEININGER continues its growth

With the launch of the MEININGER Hotel Cologne West, MEININGER celebrates its second opening this year - the MEININGER Venezia Mestre was added to the portfolio earlier in the year. The next scheduled opening is expected to be in Krakow in early October. Furthermore, MEININGER is planning to penetrate new markets with hotel openings in Barcelona, Spain, and Tel Aviv, Israel. Ajit Menon, CEO of MEININGER Hotels, says, "MEININGER Hotels is a European Hospitality group. The planned opening in Tel Aviv will be our first outside of Europe. However, we continue to focus on growth in our CORE MARKETS and TO expand our presence FURTHER in Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe as well as in the UK."
