What to do in Frankfurt on rainy days

Frankfurt in the rain: 5 great activities

Your city trip to Frankfurt has been booked for weeks, and then this: with every day that your trip to “Mainhattan” draws closer, the likelihood of rain increases and the temperatures in the weather forecast drop. But you certainly shouldn’t let that spoil your excitement about your holiday because this metropolis in Hesse offers plenty of varied activities even for rainy days.

Frankfurt indoor Activities

  1. Museums

Along Frankfurt’s “Museumsufer”, you’ll be spoiled for choice with no fewer than 15 museums directly on the banks of the Main. Alongside the world-famous Städel, the row of museums along the south side of the Main between the Eiserner Steg footbridge and the Friedensbrücke include the Museum of World Cultures, the German Film Museum and the Liebieghaus. The latter houses not only a collection of sculptures from various periods but also a charming café…. which leads us on to Tip no. 2 for a rainy day in Frankfurt am Main.

Frankfurt in the rain

  1. Café hopping

What could be nicer than coming into the cosiness from the dreary weather outside and warming up with a hot chocolate? And if it’s still pouring when you’ve finished your cocoa, we can go on a culinary journey of discovery through Frankfurt and hop into the next café in our cheerfully bright wellies. The Liebieghaus mentioned in Tip no. 1 above, located in a chateau-like town villa, is our first stop. The pretty terrace is best suited to sunny days, of course, but for that it’s all the more cosy inside. Also recommended are the Café Sugar Mama or the Café Liebfrauenberg, which at 120 years of age has gone down in café culture history.

Frankfurt in the rain

  1. Palm gardens

A garden in the rain? Even if we have to ignore the walkways and the sun loungers on the lawns thanks to the weather, the Frankfurt Palm Gardens are still well worth a visit. After all, not only can we warm ourselves up in the tropical temperatures of the greenhouses, but we can also marvel at the impressive palms, giant shrubs and ferns, and, if we look closely enough, we might even discover a little animal resident or two.

Frankfurt in the rain

  1. Kleinmarkthalle

The Frankfurt Kleinmarkthalle market hall is known as a multicultural meeting place and melting pot of international specialties. Not far from the Zeil shopping street, you’ll find more than 60 traders in the hall from Monday to Saturday, inviting you to come and sample, enjoy and stay a while.

  1. Wellness

In Frankfurt’s huge Rebstockbad swimming pool complex, the bad weather is soon forgotten in the volcano-hot whirlpool. Kids will love the Giant and “Black hole” slides. The Titus Therme also offers a pleasant blend of swimming fun and switching off from everyday stress. Here, a rainy day turns into a short relaxing break.
