A Merry Culinary Experience in Frankfurt
Festively decorated stands at the market and the scent of roasted almonds. Also, the anticipation of the first mulled wine of the season! There’s nothing that gets you in the Advent mood quite like a visit to the Christmas Market. Up until 22 December, the metropolis on the Main also radiates a pre-Christmas glow.
A Market Famous Across Germany
Thanks to its size and long tradition, the Frankfurt Christmas Market is one of the most important in all of Germany. The market stretches from the Hauptwache, past Römerberg and Paulsplatz, right down to the Mainkai. It attracts a lot of international visitors to Mainhatten, too. The centrepiece of the Christmas Market is the square at Römerberg, where a 33-metre-tall, 124-year-old European spruce tree has stood with the Town Hall as its backdrop since the beginning of November.
At the Römerberg, you can also see the nostalgic, two-storey carousel. All saddled up, it is not only children who sit there with a twinkle in their eyes, but businesspeople in suits also like to have a go on the historical-looking merry-go-round after a cup of mulled wine or two.
At Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, close to the Zeil shopping street, the LGBT community celebrate “Rosa Weihnachten” (Pink Christmas). But of course, guests of all orientations are always welcome.
A total of 200 market stands offer culinary specialties, such as mulled wine, bratwurst, chestnuts, gingerbread and traditional Frankfurter Bethmännchen, as well as hand-crafted products from the Ore Mountains, nutcrackers and Christmas tree ornaments.
The diverse range of products means you will surely be able to pick up the odd Christmas present or two. Some particularly popular gifts include the “Bembel” cookie cutter for “Plätzchen” (Christmas cookies) and fluffy unicorns that can be used both as a soft toy and a heating cushion.
Check it out if you´re an artist
If you have an interest in art, the Christmas Market for Artists in Frankfurt is definitely worth a quick visit. At Paulskirche (29 November to 21 December from 12 pm to 8 pm) and at Römerhallen (8 to 22 December from 12 pm to 8 pm), 52 artists will present their works in the fields of painting, sculpture and photography.
The historic railway also offers special Christmas rides during the Advent season.
They depart on 16 and 17 December between 11 am and 8 pm from Eisernen Steg. Further highlights of the Frankfurt Christmas Markets include the Advent concerts as part of the “Internationalen Weihnachten” (International Christmas). Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5 pm to 6.30 pm on the stage at Römerberg.
