Top things to do this Summer in Hamburg
The screech of the seagull, the gentle lapping of the waves of the Elbe and a fresh breeze on the face – that’s Hamburg in its ideal form. Many rivers flow through the city and it has more bridges than Venice, Amsterdam and Stockholm put together. Not quite at the seaside, but it feels like it, because water is never very far away.
Best places in Hamburg during Summer
Introducing five places in the Hanseatic city where you can celebrate the feeling of maritime life at the best time of year.
Außenalster
Not far from the central train station, Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, the Außenalster offers a holiday feeling close to the city. All around the Alster are a multitude of cafés and picnic lawns. And for those who like to be on the water, pedal boats, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards for hire allow you to discover the numerous small canals surrounding the Alster, from where you can marvel at Hamburg’s most beautiful villas.
Stadtpark
You can see the plumes of smoke rising upwards from a distance, hinting that it is barbecue season once again. Partially transformed into a natural swimming pool, the Stadtpark lake is inviting to swim in. If you need to cool off, then Stadtpark is the best address. The surrounding park is huge, with more than enough space for all outdoor activities. There are also often concerts on the open air stage.

Entenwerder
A trip of twelve minutes along the bike path takes you from the Deichtorhallen to Elbpark Entenwerder. There you’ll find a golden pavilion on the water, connected to the land by a bridge. Inside is the cafe Entenwerder 1. This is the start of Hamburg’s green east – home to many cultural and art projects. And next door in the Speicherstadt a city tour departs in a very special way – with an amphibian bus over land and through water.

Kaltehofe
Not far from Entenwerder is the Elbe island of Kaltehofe, a mix of industrial monument and museum complex. Many years ago Hamburg’s drinking water was filtered here. Today you can admire wild nature at the old filter basin. The water birds nestle in the reeds and the leaves of the neighbouring birch grove rustle in Hamburg’s northern wind. Kaltehofe is right on the dyke, which you can walk a little further along to visit the sheep.

Docklands
Starting at the St Pauli Piers, a wonderful walk along the harbour leads out of town to the fish market. Behind the fish market is the Docklands, an office building in the shape of a ship with a public stairway up to its roof. From here you can gaze at the massive ships rolling by or enjoy the sun as it sets behind the port cranes. Industrial romanticism ahoy!
