Where to go for a quick snack in Cologne

Sightseeing can be an exhausting thing to do and for sure makes you hungry. And when it’s time to bring back the power to explore more, small and low priced dishes might do the trick. You are
lucky. In the heart of Cologne you will find endless options to grab a quick lunch or a snack to take away or eat in one of the many cool restaurants. But we’d like to help you out: here is our selection of 6 great snack bars in Cologne!

Freddy Schilling

Homemade burgers made from sustainably grown ingredients. That is what Freddy Schilling stands for: Offered in a relaxed atmosphere in Kyffhäuserstraße, right in the students quarter.
On the menu you will also find vegetarian and vegan options of course. But do keep an eye on the  ‘Aktionsburger’ which right now is a very interesting ‘Surf N Turf Burger’: Beef coming with prawns in wild garlic, a Caipirinha Sauce and a Radiccio salad for 9,80 €. We loved the ‘Ziegenpeter’! A goat cheese burger with honey, topped with green apple-red onions-slaw on a rye bun. Worth a thought to add bacon to it. Freddy Schilling also offers some delicious side dishes like handcut fries, Rosis – baby potatoes with salted butter and rosemary – and ‘Herr Krause’, a
traditional cole slaw with a tropical twist.

Krua Thai

Over the years ‘Krua Thai’ turned itself into one of those great eating options you do not want to miss anymore. From a tiny snack restaurant they quickly moved into a much bigger space without
looking back. We love the atmosphere at this place which is always buzzing with people while thai words are flying from one table to the other. So eating here is more like hanging out and even when you’re eating on your own, nobody throws an eye on you.
Just grab a menu first thing you come in and try to choose between all those delicious options like fried prawns or the classic Tom Yam Gung. Fingerfood, soups or salads range from 4,50 to 5,50 €. The variety of main courses is huge. We went for Panaeng Gai, a red Curry with chicken, green beans, bell pepper and peanuts in coconut milk. The drinks are on the cheap side. Next to a variety of non alcoholic drinks you can also get beer like Kölsch or Singha.

Non La

„A vietnamese cuisine like the streetfood sold in Hanoi“ – that is what Non La offers its guests since it opened its doors in the belgian quarter about half a year ago. Street Food from Vietnam sold right in the heart of Cologne is definetly an interesting option. The atmosphere invites you to stay a bit longer than your lunch might last and the service is amazingly friendly.
We had a hard time to decide between all these great appetizers. Baked Wan Tan filled with prawns and pork, grilled Octopus with a homemade sauce or riece paper rolls filled with prawns, rice
noodles, salad and herbs? The lunch menu (from 12pm – 4 pm) also offers some great options like vietnamese curry with duck, mango, fresh vegetables and coconut milk for 7,90€.

Der Fisch Hof

Do not get destracted by the name of this place! The korean-japanese Fisch Hof opened its doors about 20 years ago with the only intention of selling fish! Then they recognized that Sushi was
becoming a thing in germany and from then on they just sold it. With that they were among the first in Cologne and since then they have been regularly visited by actors or poduction companies that not only loved the food but also booked the location for their films. Fisch Hof never moved so the interior now has the charme of an american diner of the 50’s with a mix of korean japanese
elements. We like that!
The Sushi is always fresh and tastes great and if you prefer eating at home you can either get it as a take away or buy all the ingredients in their small store.

Indischer Curry Hut

Location, Location, Location! For many years now this place, located at the Aachener Straße in the belgian quarter, has been an indian restaurant. At the end of 2016, owner and name changed, but the managed to keep the success. Here you can get great indian food for a great price while soaking in a buzzing atmosphere between quick lunch breaks, hectic shopping trips or intense nightlife time outs. From here everything you might long for to enjoy your day- or nightlife in Cologne is just some steps away.
The Curry Hut woos you in with a huge menu filled with low priced dishes. It also offers a separate lunch menu from 11:30 am to 5 pm. The atmosphere makes you want to stay longer but for sure
sometime your seat will be needed for the next guest. Above all when you managed to grab a seat outside, those are the best to hang out on sunny days or warm evenings.

Köln Kiosk

You did not get in contact with strangers during your time in Cologne? Now this is your chance. Just head to the ‘Köln Kiosk’ which might be the most iconic one right now in Cologne. From the
Meininger Hotel it is just a few minutes away, located in the belgian quarter.
This Kiosk is not a regular one, it’s more a Café, living room and meeting point for friends, regular customers and strangers. Thanks to owner Shirin Shaghagi the atmosphere is chilled and we promise: it won’t take long until you are talking to or drinking with people you have never met before while taking a seat on the outdoor space or on their red bench leaning on one of the big
windows. Köln Kiosk in fact consists of two spaces, but as they are not separated they function as one: one is offering the most delicious coffee to go and all the kiosk stuff, the other is serving
snacks and homemade dishes ranging from Goulash to Acai Bowls. You will also find vegetarian and vegan options, of course.
