Barbecuing in Munich

Barbecuing in Munich

This post is also available in: German

One of the most popular places for barbecuing in Munich is the bank of the River Isar, which extends from Flaucher to the southern city border and from the Isar island to Oberföhring in the north of Munich. In nice weather this place bustles with sun worshippers and swimmers who like to have a barbecue after sunset and enjoy the evening over a cool beer.

The best thing about this barbecue area is that you can keep your drinks cool in the river, you can go for a cool swim whenever you feel like it, and usually you will be surrounded by other groups of barbecuers who will often get their guitar out to entertain the crowd by the river bank. Barbecuing on the bank of the Isar is a must if you want to experience Munich like the locals.

The Hirschgarten accommodates the beer garden of the same; with its around 9000 seats it is said to be the largest beer garden in the world. Then there is the large wildlife enclosure, where you find 150-year-old trees and meadows with designated barbecue areas. From the MEININGER Hotel it’s only a few minutes’ tram ride to the Hirschgarten. Its very relaxed atmosphere attracts a diverse crowd of young people, students and families. What’s convenient about this barbecue area is that if you run out of drinks you can just have a drink in the beer garden or buy your drinks there to take away.

The Westpark (only 15 minutes’ walk from the MEININGER Hotel) attracts summer visitors with its outdoor cinema and its lakeside barbecuing areas. You don’t even have to bring your own barbecue, because there are many stone barbecues and stone seats all around the lake.

If you want to spend a relaxed day barbecuing with friends here, it’s best to arrive early – especially at the weekend – to reserve your barbecue spot. People from all over the world gather here and exchange culinary tips.

Surrounding lakes

Apart from the barbecue areas on the River Isar and in the parks around Munich, you can also spend a relaxed evening of barbecuing with friends by the lakes around Munich. Here is a list of lakes with barbecue areas.

Lake Feldmochinger

You can set up your barbecue all along the western shore of the lake and barbecue until everyone has had enough to eat.

Lake Langwieder

This lake is located north-west of Munich. In addition to its barbecue areas, you can also cool down and go for a swim here on hot summer days.

Lake Lußsee

This lake west of Munich is equally popular with families and groups of friends. The advantage: The water temperature is always perfect for swimming.

Lake Pucher Meer

If you have a bit of time on your hands you should get out of the city and visit Fürstenfeldbruck. This is where you find Lake Pucher Meer with its turquoise water, pebbly beaches and barbecue areas. There is also a nudist area further back, for those who love to bare all.
