Eat As The Romans Do

Where to Eat in Rome? Must Try Foods in Rome

Pizza, pasta and probably the best ice cream in the world: These are the dishes that come to everyone’s mind when they think of food typical of Rome. But let us show you what else the Italian capital has to offer for gourmets.

#1 Breakfast caffé al banco

As in the rest of the country, breakfast is usually eaten al banco in Rome (at the counter). A quick breakfast consisting of a Cornetto naturale, or filled with chocolate or pudding, served with a cup of cappuccino. At noon, most Italians stop drinking coffee with milk and drink espresso. It’s better for digestion.

#2 Lunch Pizza al taglio

Even for lunch, especially during the week, the people of Rome rarely take time out for a leisurely meal, because this is only enjoyed in the evenings. A slice of pizza in your hand is just perfect. One of the best is on the Campo de’ Fiori in the forno, the bakery on the corner of Via dei Cappellari. Suppli, delicious rice croquettes, are the ideal snack for in between meals, and somewhat quite addictive!

Afterwards, savour in the delicious taste of ice cream on your palate. Giolitti and Come il Latte are among the best ice cream parlours in Rome. My favourite: The Gelateria del Teatro in the enchanting Via Dei Coronari. Certainly you can watch the ice cream being made through a glass pane. The stairs in front of the shop invite you to take some respite.

#3 Aperitivo and Cena in the evening

Whether during the week or on weekends, if you go out for dinner in Italy, it is customary to have an aperitif beforehand. Aperol Spritz and Co in the bar of your choice. Depending on the venue, chips and peanuts are served and even a rich buffet in some places. This tradition has spread from northern Italy to Rome and has now become established throughout Italy.

Some people may already be satisfied after these snacks, but Romans then descend on dinner after their drinks. Pasta Cacio e Pepe is very typical of Rome and is highly recommendable. Spaghetti with only cheese and pepper may not sound very exciting, but it is veramente delizioso!
