Hey there, traveler. Geneva doesn't have a budget reputation, but a smart base helps a lot. We're MEININGER Hotel Genève Centre Charmilles, parked in the lively Charmilles district right on the Rhône. Two trolleybus stops sit outside our door, with direct lines to Cornavin central station and to Geneva Airport, so the rest of the city is an easy hop. Lake Geneva, the Old Town, St Pierre Cathedral, the Jet d'Eau, and the Palais des Nations? All a short ride away.

Inside, we've got Geneva's most affordable mix of shared dorms and private rooms, every one with its own en-suite bathroom and a free locker. Add a buffet breakfast, a friendly bar, a games space, free Wi-Fi, a kitchen with washing machines and dryers, a luggage room, and a team on the desk day and night. One Geneva-specific bonus: every overnight guest in the city gets a free Geneva Transport Card, covering buses, trams, trains, and the lake's little mouette water taxis for your whole stay. Grab yours at our reception.

FAQs

Switzerland's not cheap, but we try to keep things genuinely affordable. Dorm beds are the easiest way in on a tight budget, with private rooms a step up if you'd like your own space. Big events at Palexpo and the Geneva Motor Show push prices up; for your specific dates, the booking page is the most accurate place to look.
Geneva's small, so not very. Cornavin central station is around 15 minutes by trolleybus, Geneva Airport about 17 minutes the other way, and landmarks like the Old Town, the Jet d'Eau, the Lake Geneva shoreline, and the Palais des Nations are each one short ride from our door. With your free Geneva Transport Card, those rides are already paid for.
More privacy, more comfort, and a free city-wide transport pass that's almost worth the trip on its own. Every Geneva room comes with a private en-suite bathroom and a free locker. We've got free Wi-Fi, a buffet breakfast, a friendly bar, a games space, an on-site kitchen with laundry machines, a left-luggage room, and a reception that never closes. And every overnight guest in Geneva (yes, including ours) gets a free transport pass that runs the trams, buses, trains, and water taxis.
We've got a mix that covers every kind of traveler. Female-only and mixed dorms in 4-bed and 6-bed sizes work for solo backpackers and tight budgets. Private twins, doubles, triples, and family rooms are the call if you'd like your own door. Whichever you pick, you get a private en-suite bathroom, a locker, and free bed linen and towels.
Geneva's one of the easiest airports in Europe to leave. Grab your free Geneva Transport ticket from the machine in the baggage hall before you head out (it's printed for any visitor), then either jump on the regional train to Cornavin (six minutes) or take trolleybus 28 toward Cornavin and switch to a connecting bus to Charmilles. Door to door, you're looking at 20 to 30 minutes.
Yes! And it's worth using from day one. Every overnight guest at any Geneva hotel (us included) gets a free Geneva Transport Card on arrival. It covers Geneva's TPG buses, trams, the regional Léman Express trains, and the lovely yellow mouette water taxis that cross the harbor. Ask for yours when you check in.
Check-in opens at 3 pm, with check-out due by 11 am the morning you head off. The reception desk is staffed 24 hours, so a late flight, a long-distance train arrival, or an early ski-day departure are all fine. Bags can sit safely with us, either side of your stay.
Geneva sits at the meeting point of lake, mountains, and the UN system, and surprisingly few of its best bits cost much money. Our favorites:

- Lake Geneva and the Jet d'Eau, the city's 140-meter water jet, plus free swimming at Bains des Pâquis and the cheap yellow mouette ferries that hop across the harbor in five minutes.
- The Old Town and St Pierre Cathedral, a cobbled hilltop quarter where Calvin once preached, with a tower climb that's one of the best low-cost views over the lake and Mont Blanc.
- The Palais des Nations, the UN's European HQ, with guided tours that walk you through the Human Rights Council chamber and the rest of the diplomatic apparatus.
- The CERN Science Gateway, with free entry to the visitor center next to the Large Hadron Collider and exhibits that genuinely make particle physics make sense.
- Mont Salève, a cable car straight from the suburbs up to a Haute-Savoie hiking and paragliding plateau. Bring your passport, it's a quick day trip into France.
Very. Geneva's famously safe, easy to get around, and broadly trilingual (French, English, and whichever language whoever moved in last brought with them). The lake promenade, Old Town, and the museums around Place Neuve are all easy to enjoy alone, and our lounge bar and games space are great places to find a walking partner for the next day.
Geneva will never be cheap, but it's more doable than you'd think with a bit of planning. Loads of the best things cost nothing: the lakefront, the Old Town, the Jet d'Eau, Bains des Pâquis, and the CERN Science Gateway. Every guest gets free public transport. Supermarket picnics by the lake actually work for lunch. Combine all of that with our budget rates, and Geneva fits inside a backpacker week with room to spare.
