MEININGER Hotels is coming to Portugal

With the planned hotel in Porto, MEININGER Hotels will also be represented in Portugal, further expanding its Europe-wide network. In cooperation with Eiffage Immobilier and Covivio, a modern new building is being developed at Rua Pinto Bessa 320. A total of 228 rooms with 834 beds will be built on an area of 9,150 square meters, complemented by eleven parking spaces. The hotel project aims for BREEAM certification with a rating of “Very Good” and will be the first in Portugal to be certified according to the LCBI standard. The opening is scheduled for the first quarter of 2028.

Following the recently announced market entries in Spain with openings in Barcelona and Madrid, as well as in the United Kingdom with the opening in Edinburgh, we can now also announce our expansion into Portugal. Our first property in Porto is located in the trendy Bonfim district. Together with our partners Eiffage Immobilier and Covivio we are creating a place where travelers from all over the world will experience the diversity and openness of the Portuguese metropolis,” says Ajit Menon, CEO of MEININGER Hotels.

The innovative hybrid concept of the new hotel is aimed at MEININGER’s classic mix of guests, which includes families, groups, backpackers, business travelers, and individual guests. This is also reflected in the carefully planned room layout: 21 double rooms, 70 triple rooms, 120 quadruple rooms, and 17 spacious six-bed rooms.

Bonfim: A hotspot for creatives and trendsetters

Porto stands for innovation, creativity, and diversity, values that MEININGER Hotels also reflect with their hybrid concept of hostel and hotel: central, flexible, and open to everyone. According to the National Institute of Statistics, the Porto region and Northern Portugal recorded nearly 7 million overnight guests and over 13 million overnight stays in 2024. The city impresses with its well-preserved cultural heritage, world-famous port wine, diverse local gastronomy, and numerous festivals and events. Here, medieval and Baroque architecture meets modern design, from the historic city center (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Dom Luís I Bridge to the Palácio da Bolsa, Casa da Música, and the Serralves Museum.

The Bonfim district has developed in recent years into one of Porto’s trendiest neighborhoods, characterized by galleries, innovative shops, and a vibrant dining scene along the Douro River. The location of the new MEININGER Hotel offers excellent transport connections to the city’s attractions and the airport. The international Campanhã station, with metro, train, and bus connections, is just a few minutes away. In addition, a high-speed rail link to Lisbon is planned by 2030, which will reduce travel time between the two cities by around one and a half hours.
